It is easy to see why Pope Francis exclaimed the book did him a lot of good. Me too. The book has opened my eyes to a merciful God like Jesus Christ vs the angry God portrayed in the Torah, particularly Exodus.

Cardinal Kasper explains in detail the study, in systematic theology, of justice and a punitive God. By doing so the reader comes to understand why European Protestants and now American fundamentalist Catholics obsess about retributive justice as opposed to merciful justice. It stems from Martin Luther''s inner conflict of reconciling a merciful God to one who was just.

This book is worth every penny. I bought the Kindle version and will be holding a book discussion at our parish. The Rector and DRE are on board.

"The best known example and the one with the greatest consequences in church history is young Martin Luther, for whom the question—“ How do I get a gracious God?”—caused a frightening turmoil of conscience for a long time until he came to know that, according to the Bible, God’s justice is not God’s punitive justice, but rather God’s justifying justice, which includes his mercy. The church became divided over this issue in the sixteenth century. The relation of justice and mercy thus became the fateful question of Western theology."

This was important to read because of Card Kasper''s long record as an ecumenical and open-minded high official of the Church, and a long-time Archbishop in Germany who has been trying for decades to apply the Church''s convictions about marriage to today''s world. Finally he on the inside of the Vatican, as a trusted confidant of Pope Francis. The book itself is not original is what it says from Church and Bible, nor is it in striking prose. What it does is to state the classic teaching on mercy, and even more, the actions of Jesus, and refuse to qualify them in a way that reduces what is revealed to us. He does not introduce typical Roman qualifications, e.g. "none of this, however, should be taken as contrary to the Church''s policy on X, or Y..." or "taken to imply that any of the Church''s official position on Z can be changed..." etc. He lets the chips fall where they may. A big help to those who love the Church and believe it has humankind''s best hopes at heart.

I have taught college courses in "Theology of God," and Cardinal Kasper''s treatment exceeds any text book I have ever used. He addresses the concerns and questions of contemporary skeptics, and at the same time expands (and corrects) the assumptions of traditional Christian beliefs about the nature of God. The English translation is excellent, and very readable for the general audience. This book could be the basis of a study club or adult faith discussion group. It would be hard to compress into one discussion. People will probably want to study it chapter-by-chapter, right up to the last chapters, which deal with the ways in which each of us, and all of us together, created in the "image of God," are called to manifest the Mercy of God wherever we are.

Tracing that unbroken chain to the New Testament, the Church, and ultimately to Mary, he guides us to see how mercy can and should be foundational for how we organize our lives and society. Well done!

If one comments that Cardinal Kasper is preaching to the choir, he is elucidating the foundation of the Christian good news. Without abandoning traditional personal piety, he reminds the flock of the social dimension of faith in today''s world. Cardinal Kasper has this rare quality of both a biblical scholar and a pastor. Recommend this book to those who doubt about the relevancy of a very old religion and tradition.
